Bredo / Uninstall
Removing Bredo completely
Everything Bredo keeps on your Mac, where it is, and what is safe to leave alone. Quit Bredo first (Bredo → Quit Bredo), and let a running copy or import finish or cancel it.
Your footage is not in any of this
- Bredo never copies footage into its library folder. Footage stays where it was, or where Bredo copied it: the drives and folders you chose as destinations.
- The library holds only what Bredo worked out about your footage: the catalogue, still images (posters and keyframes), transcripts and search data.
- Removing Bredo, or everything below, does not touch a single clip.
Before you delete anything: what you lose
- Undo Last Copy and transfer reports. The records of each copy (which files arrived, and their checksums) are in the library folder. Without them Bredo cannot undo a copy or show its report.
- Proof that a card is safe to erase. If a card has not been erased yet, erase it (or keep it) before removing the library — or keep the library.
- Your corrections. Titles, ratings, subjects and places you fixed by hand live only in the catalogue.
- Your licence file. Keep your licence email, or copy
licence.txt(below) somewhere first.
If you might come back, keep the library folder: a reinstalled Bredo opens it as it was.
1. The app
- Drag Bredo from Applications to the Trash.
2. The library
- Folder:
~/Library/Application Support/Bredo/ - Inside it:
Library/—catalogue.sqlite(and its-wal/-shmfiles),derived/(posters and keyframes),Index/(visual search data),snapshots/(catalogue backups),ingest-state/,sorts/andbackups/(copy records), andlicence.txtDiagnostics/problems.json— crashes and hangs macOS reported to Bredo
- To get there: Finder → Go → Go to Folder… (⇧⌘G) → paste
~/Library/Application Support/Bredo→ move the folder to the Trash. - An older copy that was never opened since the app was renamed may have left
~/Library/Application Support/Kern/or~/Library/Application Support/Rushes/instead. Same contents; remove it the same way.
3. Preferences
- File:
~/Library/Preferences/com.baustaddigital.bredo.plist - macOS caches preferences, so deleting the file while you are logged in may not stick. In Terminal:
defaults delete com.baustaddigital.bredo
- Pre-rename builds only:
defaults delete com.baustaddigital.kernanddefaults delete com.baustaddigital.rushes
4. Caches and window state
Safe to delete; macOS or Bredo recreates them if needed.
~/Library/Caches/com.baustaddigital.bredo/— includes downloaded updates (Sparkle)~/Library/HTTPStorages/com.baustaddigital.bredo/— if present, from update checks~/Library/Saved Application State/com.baustaddigital.bredo.savedState/— window positions- Temporary audio files Bredo makes while transcribing (
bredo-….caf) are in the system's temporary folder and removed by macOS.
5. The trial count in your keychain
- Bredo records how many clips it has copied in during the trial as a password item in your login keychain:
- Name (label): Bredo trial
- Where / service:
com.baustaddigital.bredo.trial - Account:
brought-in
- It holds a number, nothing personal, and is not synced to iCloud.
- To remove it: open Keychain Access → login keychain → search for Bredo trial → select it → Delete.
- If you reinstall later with the item still there, the trial carries on where it was. Without it, the count starts again from what the library can prove Bredo copied in — nothing at all, if you removed the library too.
6. Spotlight
- Bredo adds each clip (title, place, date, transcript excerpt, thumbnail) to your Mac's own Spotlight index, under Bredo's app identifier. It stays on your Mac.
- These entries are owned by the app. macOS normally drops an app's entries once the app is gone, but it does not promise when.
- Do this before you delete the app: Bredo → Settings → Storage → Spotlight → Remove Bredo's Spotlight Entries. It takes out only what Bredo put there; the rest of your Mac's Spotlight index is untouched, nothing is re-indexed, and no footage is involved.
- If the app is already gone, or you would rather not open it: rebuilding the Spotlight index clears them too, but it re-indexes the whole Mac and can take a while:
- System Settings → Spotlight → Search Privacy… → add your startup disk → wait a minute → remove it again.
- Or in Terminal:
sudo mdutil -E /
- To stop Spotlight showing them without removing anything: System Settings → Spotlight → turn off the result categories you don't want.
7. Siri and Shortcuts
- Bredo's own actions (find footage, check a card) disappear from Shortcuts when the app is removed.
- Shortcuts you made with Bredo actions stay in the Shortcuts app and will show a missing app. Open Shortcuts and delete them.
8. Left on your drives on purpose
Keep these. They belong with your footage, not with the app.
ascmhl/folders at the top of each drive or folder Bredo copied into. These are standard ASC Media Hash Lists (a checksum record other tools such as theascmhlcommand, OffShoot or Silverstack can read). Deleting them does not affect the footage, but they are the only record that travels with it proving the copy was verified.- The folders Bredo arranged footage into on your destinations (dated folders). They are ordinary folders; Bredo is not needed to open them.
